Resumo:
Sustainable fisheries management requires a balance between environmental, economic and social objectives while effectively adressing uncertainty. A key challenge is to ensure that management advice leads to the long-term sustainability of fish stocks while at the same time maintaining a productive fishery. Management strategy evaluation (MSE) is a robust tool to test the performance of harvest strategies under uncertain conditions. For this Master’s thesis we propose to apply MSE to evaluate management strategies for the southern horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) fishery a commercially important stock in the region.. The student will develop operating models that incorporate a range of assumptions regarding the stock-recruitment relationship, which remains one of the most uncertain components of fish population dynamics. Understanding this relationship is crucial, as recruitment variability significantly influences long-term stock productivity and the resilience of fish populations to environmental change. The study will also explore how alternative strategies perform under changing environmental and biological scenarios. By simulating these conditions, the study aims to identify sustainable and robust management approaches. The results of the study will support fisheries managers in the development of adaptive management strategies.
